The White Elephant

Postal on the Post

First off let me say, I do not make money on the shipping. A typical box costs $3 and packing material is very expensive. I do not charge for them, nor do I charge for the time it takes or the engineering required to fit pieces together in order to fit into the box. On some items I get a 5% discount on some items (like whoopee, the tax is more). So what I'm getting at is "I am not the one charging you this much for postage!" and "I need you to help me change it."

Everything else is shipped according to the "how we can rip them off more" minimum density rules, where the real weight does not matter.

  1. Determine the volume of the package.
  2. Length times the Height times the Width (L x H x W = volume)
  3. Find the volumetric weight.
  4. For the volumetric weight in kilograms, divide the volume of the item (in cubic centimetres, as calculated in step 1) by a cubing factor of 6,000.
For the volumetric weight in pounds, divide the volume of the item (in cubic inches, as calculated in step 1) by 165.
  5. Determine the actual weight.
  6. Weigh the item to determine the actual weight in lb. or kg.
  7. Determine the shipping price.
  8. The shipping price is calculated using the greater of the volumetric weight or the actual weight.
Note: The actual weight cannot exceed 30 kg.

Complaining about Canada Postage

If you want to change some things in your life...
...you're going to have to change some things in your life.

These complaints should be directed to Canada Post management, The minsiter responsible for Canada Post, opposition critics, and Federal MPs. Letters should sound professional, be accurate, and stick to the point.

Canada Post staff emails all format as Firstname.lastname@canadapost.postescanada.ca.

Management to consider contacting:

President : Moya Greene

Chief Operating Officer: Jaques Cote

Senior Vice Presidents of:
Transaction Mail: Peter Melanson
Marketing, Sales and Service: Stewart Bacon
Parcels: Louis O'Brien
Enterprise Transformation and Continuous Improvement: Cal Hart

VicePresidents of:
General Business Sales: Serge Pitre

International Product Management: Gail Ryan

General Manager, Marketing, Strategy and Planning: John Swettenham

Federal MPs emails format lastname.firstinitial@parl.gc.ca

As of Sept 2008:

The Minister responsible for Canada Post, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities: Hon. Lawrence Cannon

The Official Opposition Critics:
BÉLANGER, Mauril - (Lib.)
LAFRAMBOISE, Mario - (B.Q.)
CHRISTOPHERSON, David - (N.D.P.)

Minister of International Trade: Emerson, David (Hon.)

Mail can be sent FREE of postage to any member of parliament addressed to them at:

House of Commons
Ottawa, Ontario
K1A 0A6

Check them here or find others to contact:
http://www2.parl.gc.ca/Parlinfo/Compilations/HouseOfCommons/MinistryMembers.aspx

Contacting media outlets can be a very effective tool in fighting adverse policy. Newpapers reportes especially thsoe who have covered consumer issues, letters to the editor, television or radio call in shows.

Local Canada Post outlets, Canada Post ombudsman, or Canada Post call center do not have a role in policy decisions, directing complaints to them will not be effective.

Speakin' of big items... friggin Canada Post, NAFTA, and the big couriers

Complete table sets are very expensive to ship. They have to go on Greyhound here in Canada, who are terrific, 24" height restriction and I need to package well. But only in Canada you say, pity. - Going to the US or overseas... small items are no problem, fairly inexpensive and insurable. Large items are restricted to Length plus Girth shall not exceed 300cm - A two foot square box weighing one pound is far to big for a postal worker to move. The LARGEST BOX I CAN SEND to an address outside of Canada is a 25" x25" x16" box. Why?

And you friggin' fellow Canadians, COMPLAIN, do something! Because of our apathy we are being screwed! And not just by the post.

Here is an example, I can send a small box anywhere in the world for less than it costs to send it across the street.

A one (1) pound box at 12" x 5" x 5"
costs to mail in Canada

Across the street - $7.67 ($6.80 + 0.44 fuel charge + 0.43 tax)
3 Provinces over - $11.24 ($9.95 + 0.65 fuel charge + 0.64 tax)

yet
To anywhere in the USA - $6.90

and
To anywhere in the world - $7.50

CHECK IT YOURSELF - Then complain!

'Cause we're gettin' burnt!

I bet the prices have gone up from what I show here too.

Everybody else here wants even more $$$ to ship.
Why, because they can get away with it.
So if you want to order a big piece/item from me, don't skimp on the details as it will cost a bit in the postage department.
I can send large orders within Canada if going with Greyhound.

Smaller pieces, they are no problem if it weighs under 1kg and length+height+width is smaller than 90cm
Same for overseas (approx. $15 surface a.k.a. ship or $30 for air)
